Assault case on 24th June, 2010

A chin refugee name Mr. Lai Za Ma (06IND00473) was deliberately attacked by more than ten local youths at Chanakya Place, Uttam Nagar, west Delhi on 24th June, 2010 at about 9:30 pm while returning from Church.

Mr. Lai Za Ma and his friend (Choir members) were learning for group song at Chin Christian Fellowship (LCC) as usual.  He returned from the church at 9:30 and while walking on the street, more than ten drunkard youths stopped him and attacked him while three of them grasped him from behind and pushed his bag. He sustained minor injuries on his face and nose bleeding.

A Chin refugee widow repeatedly teased sexually

A Chin refugee widow name Mrs. Ngun Neih (07/IND01204) had admitted lately that she had been sexually abused repeatedly at different locations by different local Indian.  She said that she was illiterate and did not know how to response the criminals or how to report to the police or to the UNHCR. She added that once she went for help to the Woman Protection Center, one of the UNHCR’s implementing partners; she could not meet the officer and could not share about her sorrows.

On 5th January, 2010 she was attempted to rape by the auto driver at her way back from Gold Market (Near Red Cross Office), after purchasing some second hand clothes. The auto driver drove her to the wrong direction and when she complaints about the road he led, he replied that he was just followed the short cut. He then drove her to unknown solitary place and tried to rape her. He attacked with a knife and tears off her skirt and she sustained minor injury on the lower part of her belly. He warned her to surrender so that she might not be harmed, but she defends herself with all her strength and shouted for help. Fortunately after ten minutes fighting, three people come near the incident place and when the criminal saw them he was afraid and he suddenly pushed her down from the auto rickshaw and run away with her bag.

The update news and situations of Chin Refugees in Delhi

The population of Burmese refugees in Delhi has been increasing hugely and rapidly day by day. In the past 2008 there were about 2,800 Burmese (Chin) refugees and asylum seekers in New Delhi, India. At the end of 2009 the numbers stood at about 6,500. Now, in the middle of 2010 it had been increased at about 8,070. Out of the total numbers of Burmese refugees and asylum seekers, 95% are the Chin people.  Among the 8070, less than half about 3500 were recognized refugees and the remaining of about 4576 are asylum seekers. All these people had left their houses, possessions, relatives and country in order to have safety and security for their life.  It may be questionable the reason why the rapid increment of the refugees and asylum seekers here in New Delhi. Therefore, according to the records and statistics of the CRC, we found out and highlighted the major reasons as follows;

Asault case on 8th June, 2010

On 8th June, 2010 around 1:30 pm a Burmese (Chin) refugee named Mr. Sang Hlei Uk the holder of UNHCR No. 08IND0234 had been unconditionally and brutally beaten up by the three local people at the road side of Sitapuri, West Delhi.

Mr. Sang Hlei Uk was working at a small local company as a sweeper he came back from the company for lunch to Mahindra Park at 1:00 pm. After taking his lunch when he was going for work at 1:30 pm riding his cycle, the three local men standing in the road side unexpectedly and unconditionally attacked him. He then felt down from his running cycle and the three criminal attacked him without asking any question. There are few people around there but no one to come up to intervene the fighting. Sexual Harassment on 6th June, 2010

A sexual harassment had happened to A Burmese (Chin) refugee name Mrs. Sui Ngun Tial, W/o Mr. Cung Bawi  a holder of UNHCR certificate no. 06IND00469 on 6th June, 2010 at Sitapuri Part II, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi.

The incident started while they were going back to home from the clinic with her husband and their minor son at the main road of Sunday Market (Chanakya Place) three men biker followed them and started to gage or stare at her. The husband thought that they were just making fun to them but the bikers secretly followed them from behind. When they were about to arrive their home Mrs. Sui Ngun Tial went to buy the drinking water from the nearby shop, by taking the chance as opportunity, one of the bikers approached her and thrust his hand toward her buttock and back without having any words. When the woman recognized that someone had touching her, she shout for help and also slapped him with her bare hand. Read the rest of this entry »
